The A9 South section lies partially within an area known as “Highland Perthshire”, and for much of this section the route lies close to the River Tay, which is the longest river in Scotland, or the River Tummel.

Communities on this section of the route include Luncarty, Bankfoot, Dunkeld and Birnam, and Pitlochry. 

The A9 Dualling South section of the A9 corridor requires 32.5km of dualling to be carried out.  This section consists of four projects:

Luncarty to Pass of Birnam

The Luncarty to Pass of Birnam project has been completed. Construction of the Luncarty to Pass of Birnam project using a design and build contract started in 2018 and dualling became operational in August 2021.

A contract for the Tay Crossing to Ballinluig project was awarded in Summer 2025 and construction work is currently underway, with dualling expected to become operational by the end of 2028.

Procurement of a design and build contract for construction of the Pitlochry to Killiecrankie project commenced in Summer 2025, with contract award expected in Autumn 2026 and dualling expected to become operational by the end of 2030.

Subject to completion of statutory processes, procurement of a design and build contract for construction of the Pass of Birnam to Tay Crossing project is expected to start in Summer 2028, with contract award expected in Spring 2029 and dualling expected to become operational by the end of 2033.
